Street food Thursday

Fancy a bite to eat? Then today’s your lucky day, and every Thursday from now on for that matter. Our friends at Markthalle IX, Kitchensurfing and Big Stuff Smoked BBQ have joined culinary forces and address books to put on Street Food Thursday, a street food party, the likes of which the capital has never seen before. The 11th of April marks the start of a first for Berlin: the city’s very own weekly street food night market in Kreuzberg’s Markthalle IX. From now on, you can test a wide range of different delicacies served up by various market stalls and chefs in the beautiful surroundings of the historical hall. Besides the market hall’s tenants who normally serve up their street and market food snacks and delicacies – for example, Glut & Späne and Big Stuff Smoked BBQ, who incidentally we will be interviewing in our next issue of the magazine – Street Food Thursday also sees a whole bevy of new stalls and chefs offering a choice of street food delights.

From Fräulein Kimchi serving Korean salads, to Frau Siripene aka Glücksmädchen with Thai street dishes, to beef brisket sandwiches by Big Stuff Smoked BBQ, to HelloGoodPie’s delicious British pie variations, and lots lots more. There really is something for every taste. What also makes the event well worth the visit, besides being able to sample lots of different dishes at affordable prices, is the chance to discover some of the city’s – ahem – undiscovered culinary talents.

Courtesy of the folks at Kitchensurfing, most of the chefs at the event involved don’t own, run or work in their own restaurants. Instead, they are the movers and shakers behind Berlin’s burgeoning pop-up restaurant and supper club scene that tends to operate under the radar. That doesn’t mean the city’s star chefs aren’t invited to the party. Quite the opposite, in fact. With Stefan Hartmann from Hartmanns Restaurant making an appearance tonight, Street Food Thursday also gives highbrow chefs an opportunity to let their hair down for a night and cook for customers who wouldn’t normally get to sample Michelin star cuisine.
