Berlin’s hotting up! From Saturday, the celebrated musical Kiss me, Kate (a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew) will be back on the programme at the Komische Oper. Cole Porter’s Broadway hit is all about love and petty jealousies, and features a number of classic tunes (Always True to You in My Fashion, Too Darn Hot and So In Love). Charged with staging the production at the Komische Oper is Barry Kosky, who describes Kiss me, Kate as a mixture of Who’s Afraid of Virgina Woolf and The Muppets. Throw in a spot of tap dancing, some Varieté interludes, Big Band and the wonderful Dagmar Manzel playing the lead role and that just about sums it up.
