Reykjavik calling
The delayed opening of Berlin’s new airport came as quite a shock for everyone – including, it seems, those in charge of the project. Just three weeks before the first planes were due to arrive on the runways it was announced that the airport wouldn’t be ready, causing logistical chaos, soaring costs and red faces all round. The new opening date, which has been set for the 17th of March 2013, is already looking unrealistic.
But all is not lost; the delay means a reprieve for Berlin’s historic and much loved airports Tegel and Schönefeld. One airline which has just begun operations from the latter is WOW air. Dass der Start des neuen Berliner Flughafens kurz vor der Eröffnungsparty ins nächste Jahr verschoben werden musste, kam unverhofft – selbst die Verantwortlichen taten verblüfft. Drei Wochen bevor die ersten Flugzeuge landen sollten hieß es: Sorry, der Flughafen dauert etwas länger. Die Kosten werden explodieren, viele Leute müssen sich einen neuen Job suchen und die alten Flughäfen müssen noch etwas länger halten. Mittlerweile ist sogar fraglich, ob der neue Termin, der 17. März 2013, gehalten werden kann.
Aber das hält tapfere Fluggesellschaften nicht davon ab, die beliebten alten Berliner Airports weiter anzusteuern. Es gibt sogar attraktive neue Verbindungen. Neu in Schönefeld ist WOW air, die Airline bietet günstige Direktverbindungen nach Island an. Dadurch ist man von Berlin aus nun noch näher an Polarlichtern, blubbernden Geysiren und isländischen Feenlandschaften. An Bord gibt es isländische Erfrischungen, einmal im Monat fliegt sogar der Airline-Chef selbst mit, um nach dem rechten zu sehen. Hey, das ist mal Kundenservice!

I’ve been to Iceland when I was a little girl. The memory of the stupendous nature, the hot geysers and the friendly people never left me. I would love to return and show it to my hubby and children.
